WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO CLASS?
Most importantly, wear something comfortable to move in (no jeans or mini-skirts). Wear work-out clothes, yoga pants, or a skirt and top. A scarf tied at your hips is a simply way to spice things up. Adding a coin belt adds sound and helps you see and feel your hip movements.

Once you come to class, you’ll get more ideas of what to wear. Some dancers like to dress up while others keep it simple.

As for your FEET, Studio A floors are wood, so some dance barefoot while others wear sandals. My favorite dance sandals are on my website, and are fabulous, though not required for classes.

DO I NEED ANY SPECIAL “EQUIPMENT”?
I teach Bellydance with Veils and Finger Cymbals, so if you have them, bring them! If you don't have them, you'll find a few are available to borrow in class. There are many colors available plus new sets of finger cymbals for purchase in class or at www.mesmera.com.

WHICH LEVEL AM I?
In my Basic Bellydance class, I cover Beginning to Intermediate technique with a fun, straight-forward approach. I’m known for clear breakdowns, so even if it’s your first bellydance class, you’ll be dancing from the start. I also recommend this class for those that have taken bellydance before, and other styles of dance, as we cover a wide range of essentials, which provides a great opportunity to refine and improve what has previously been developed.

In Intermediate/Advanced, I include combinations, layering, variations, veils, finger cymbals, working with a variety of arabic rhythms, phrases, traveling, turns, accents and performance skills.

Note: Special rate for taking both the Basic and Advanced class in the same night. I encourage my students to graduate from Basic, where they learn a wide variety of moves, into Intermediate/Advanced so they can enjoy integrating them into the artistry of the dance.

Remember also that a great way to improve is to continue with home study, available through my Award-Winning DVDs (and limited VHS available), http://www.mesmera.com/videos.html

HOW CAN I GET THE BEST PRICE?
Take 2 classes in one night for $20! Alternately, buy my 5-class Dance Card for per-class savings.
WHERE CAN I BUY A COIN BELT / FINGER CYMBALS / SILK VEIL / DANCE SANDALS . . . etc?
I’m so glad you asked! These are all available right here on the website, as well as directly from me in class! You’ll get a sense of your priorities (which item you most need for class) and build up your very own bellydance wardrobe at just the pace you like. Keep an eye out for Bellydance events and Bazaars where you can find eclectic belts, jewelry and more. Visit my shop here.

WHAT IS YOUR PAYMENT POLICY?
You can pay the one time drop-in fee or save money and buy a 5-class Dance Card. Cards can be purchased online ahead of time, or you can pay in class with cash, check or credit card.
CAN I GET A REFUND FOR UNUSED CLASSES?
Cards are valid for one year from purchase date. To renew, simply request by phone or e-mail. Unused portions can be used towards merchandise or shared with a friend.
WHAT IF I LOSE MY CARD?
Check with Mesmera immediately to report a missing card. She may have found it after class, and/or can track how many classes you had left at the time. In such a case, a duplicate card can be made for you.
CAN I SHARE MY CARD WITH A FRIEND?
Absolutely!

IS BELLYDANCING GOOD EXERCISE?
Absolutely Yes! We always work up a good sweat, which I believe is the Fountain of Youth! Belly dancing can be an effective cardiovascular exercise that has been proven to strengthen core muscles through the art of moving one part of the body and not others. In general, the moves are organic, feminine, and gentle, unlike other forms of dance, or aerobics that are often high impact.

The more you fine tune your bellydancing, the more you literally sculpt your body. I break down the moves into geometry and shapes and instruct on how best to form them with our bodies. Remember that Bellydance is a Celebration, and enjoying ourselves, with all of our individual variations is the first step.

ARE THERE ANY PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS OF BELLYDANCE?
It has been my experience through 30 years of teaching, that using the body for bellydance has only favorable side effects......correct posture makes a big difference, as does alignment, in the potential benefits. When someone is concerned, or has been in an injury, I always advise them to make the movements very small and slower, so that you are always "Moving at the speed of Delight". In other words, it's natural for this dance to feel good to us and it's not necessary to push anything. You may wish to ask your doctor about it.

IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT FOR STARTING TO BELLYDANCE?
Absolutely not. I teach all ages from teens on up, including Mother-Daughter classes.

CAN I TAKE BELLYDANCE CLASS IF I’M PREGNANT?
Absolutely Yes! Throughout the years of teaching, there have been many Moms w/babies on the way in my classes. I often encourage them to adapt certain moves to make them more appropriate and always want to know that your doctor has already approved.

ARE THE CLASSES CO-ED?
Though it is not often that men attend class, men are welcome in my classes.

CAN I BRING MY CHILD(REN) WITH ME?
As long as the child is not distracting to you or other dancers in class, it's fine with me. It helps if they have an activity or something to read.

IF I JOIN A CLASS, WILL I HAVE TO PERFORM IN FRONT OF PEOPLE?
In our basic class, we all dance together. I do give personal attention to each dancer, but no one is asked to dance alone. In my advanced classes, we work on Artistry and Creativity and do dance for each other, usually in small classes.

IF I WANT TO PERFORM MY NEW BELLYDANCE SKILLS, WHERE CAN I DANCE?

There are several opportunities during the year where we can perform. Sometimes it is free-form and others, it's a choreography that has been taught in class, or a Sunday afternoon seminar. It's always a fun experience for us all.
